The former administrative building of St Mary’s Hospital, an asylum that once treated up to 2,000 patients at a time, is today a gastropub with 11 bedrooms. Known as St Mary’s Inn, you can find this pub and B&B a couple of miles south-west of Morpeth in Northumberland.

The hospital closed back in 1996. It was only in November 2014 that the doors of St Mary’s Inn opened to the public. If you’re in Northumberland and enjoy hearty British cuisine you might even say you’d be mad not to consider dining here.

A pub with guestrooms


The ground floor of the redbrick building is now hosts a pub-restaurant while the guestrooms are located on the first floor. St Mary’s Inn is dog friendly and designed to be accessible for wheelchairs.

Quality, locally sourced ingredients are used to prepare dishes ranging from pie and mash to grilled rib-eye steaks. If you’re a foodie ask about the day’s specials. They’re displayed on a chalkboard at the back of the restaurant. Come at the right time of year and you’ll see tender Northumbrian lamb on the menu.

Be warned, come hungry. Portions are generous and the presentation of the food is good, though refreshingly unpretentious. You’ll get pub grub that’s freshly made. The fish and chips are served with home-style tartar sauce – exactly what you want if you’ve spent the day burning calories on a bicycle or walking on footpaths in rural Northumberland.

The potted pork has a gentle tarragon undertone and is served with sourdough toast and a saucer of pickles that slowly release their flavour. It’s a dish that’s worth well worth trying.

Delicious food made with local ingredients

It’s unlikely you’ll still be hungry after a starter and main course but the puddings are too tempting to miss. The sticky toffee pudding is served with vanilla ice cream.

As the reputation of St Mary’s Inn grows it makes sense to book a table if you plan on heading here for afternoon tea or Sunday lunch.

If craft beers are your thing make sure you take a look along the pumps on the bar. Local breweries – including the Allendale Brewery, Anarchy Brew Co, Mordue Brewery and Wylam Brewery – deliver their ales. The latter, based in the Tyne Valley, brews its St Mary’s Ale for the inn.

Prefer whisky? Then take a look at the bottles on display. You’ll see more than 40.

Around 15 wines are served by the glass at any given time.

The décor of the former admin building creates the impression the pub opened long before November 2014. Heavy wooden tables, parquet flooring and seven log fires help create a traditional look.

Framed cartoons, drawn by David Haldane, and Norman Cornish’s oil paintings of the everyday life in the north-east’s coalmining communities decorate the walls. Gary Tiplady’s canine sculptures, crafted from wire, by stand by fireplaces, faithfully depicting the stance of dogs.

Ask for details of the 20km and 40km circular routes that start and end at St Mary’s Inn if you enjoy cycling. A group departs each Wednesday evening and Sunday morning, welcoming guest riders.
