St Mary’s Inn near Morpeth, Northumberland

The former administrative building of St Mary’s Hospital, an asylum that once treated up to 2,000 patients at a time, was briefly a gastropub with 11 bedrooms known as St Mary’s Inn. The business closed in May 2017. The premises are a couple of miles south-west of Morpeth in Northumberland.

The hospital closed back in 1996. It was only in November 2014 that the doors of St Mary’s Inn opened to the public.

A pub with guestrooms

The ground floor of the redbrick building hosted the pub-restaurant while the guestrooms were located on the first floor. St Mary’s Inn was dog friendly and designed to be accessible for wheelchairs.

Quality, locally sourced ingredients were used to prepare dishes ranging from pie and mash to grilled rib-eye steaks. Come at the right time of year and tender Northumbrian lamb was on the menu.

Portions were generous and the presentation of the food good, though refreshingly unpretentious.  It was freshly made pub grub. The fish and chips were served with home-style tartar sauce – ideal after spending the day burning calories on a bicycle or walking on footpaths in rural Northumberland.

The potted pork had a gentle tarragon undertone and was served with sourdough toast and a saucer of pickles that slowly released their flavour.

Delicious food made with local ingredients

It’s unlikely you’d still be hungry after a starter and main course but the puddings were too tempting to miss. The sticky toffee pudding was served with vanilla ice cream.

Local breweries – including the Allendale Brewery, Anarchy Brew Co, Mordue Brewery and Wylam Brewery – delivered their ales. The latter, based in the Tyne Valley, brewed its St Mary’s Ale specifically for the inn.

The décor of the former admin building created the impression the pub opened long before November 2014. Heavy wooden tables, parquet flooring and seven log fires help create a traditional look.

Framed cartoons, drawn by David Haldane, and Norman Cornish’s oil paintings of the everyday life in the north-east’s coalmining communities decorated the walls. Gary Tiplady’s canine sculptures, crafted from wire, stood by fireplaces, faithfully depicting the stance of dogs.

St Mary’s Inn

St Mary’s Inn (stmarysinn.co.uk) is no longer operational.
