Training for Afghanistan in the Mojave Desert

Fort Irwin was established during World War Two as an artillery training base. It was closed in the early ‘70s and reopened again, becoming the home of the National Training Center, where troops trained for potential combat scenarios. It’s the home of twelve mock villages, and the Canadians were being deployed for manoeuvres in two of them, where they’d encounter Farsi-speaking “villagers” and hostile “insurgents”.

“We were simply going to write, blog, record, photograph and video the journey in order to at least cover costs… Now we’re raising funds for the British Heart Foundation, two journalists’ welfare charities, and by virtue of donating our vehicle, directly supporting a primary health care clinic in Mali,” says Nick Redmayne, one of the men who have jokingly dubbed themselves ‘The Timbuk Two’.
