Spread the love

Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, has long been a popular holiday destination. Thinking of heading there? It offers a range of exciting activities, on land, in the Atlantic Ocean and up in the air.

Don’t need to waste your time lounging around the pool or spending afternoons snoozing on the beach. Man up. Get your adrenalin flowing and return home with a set of selfies that’ll make mates envious.

Here are some of the many activities you could give a go:

Scuba diving or snorkelling with green turtles

The relatively warm ocean water off Tenerife means it’s a pleasure to take a dip in the Atlantic.

A number of dive schools operate on the island, meaning you shouldn’t have any problems getting hold of kit or joining up with other people to go scuba diving.

Why not try an Aquatic Fly Over (www.flyover.es; tel. +34 654 450148). Not sure what that means? It’s an opportunity to go snorkelling or scuba diving, to a maximum depth of 10 metres, in one of Tenerife’s many bays. The fly over—which even novices can experience—provides opportunities to swim next to green turtles, which can weigh up to 300 kilograms and live for 80 years.

Paragliding for memorable aerial views

Look into the sky on calm days and you’ll see paragliders up in the air.

Take your pick from the island’s many operators, which include Happyfly Tenerife (www.happyflytenerife.com; +34 639 384124). Their ‘Normal’ flights last between 15 and 25 minutes while ‘High Performance’ flights have a duration of between 25 and 35 minutes.

Take-off points vary, according to the weather, so it’s handy to look out for operators that offer a pick up and drop off service.

Some of the most spectacular paragliding experiences on Tenerife involve taking off in Teide National Park, at an altitude of around 2,400 metres above sea level. From there it can take anything between 40 to 60 minutes to descend into Puerto de la Cruz.

Horse riding through the Canarian countryside

Fancy saddling up and trekking across country on a horse? It’s a great way of seeing Tenerife’s countryside.

You can go horse and pony riding at the Club Hipico Cabuquero, located on the Finca Cabuquero (www.horseridingintenerife.com; +34 646 883823) at Aldea Blanca.

If you’re a beginner then let Jim and Sara, the British owners, know and they’ll ensure you go riding on one of the easier routes. If you’re an experienced rider then you’ll ride through more challenging terrain.

Thankfully, you don’t need to have all your own kit. At the Blackstone Surf Center (www.blackstonesurfcenter.com; +34 685 128689), in Las Americas, you can hire equipment and make use of changing facilities.

If you’ve never tried surfing previously why not try an introductory two-hour lesson or book onto a course for beginners, with five lessons.
