Pestana Palace Hotel and National Monument, Lisbon

Spread the love

The Pestana Palace Hotel and National Monument is a five-star hotel in Lisbon, Portugal.

This luxury hotel, located roughly half-way between Lisbon’s waterfront Praca do Comercio and Belem, is the place to stay chosen by numerous A-list celebrities during their visits to the Portuguese capital.

Unusually, this property is more than just a hotel – it’s also a national monument. The hotel reception, luxury suites and restaurant are situated within the grand Palace of the Marquis of Valle Flor. A number of rooms and the chapel are open to viewing by members of the general public, and this is a pleasant addition to the more widely-known attractions of Lisbon.

One of Lisbon’s secret tips

If you like places that might be described as “secret tips” for a city break then it is worth coming here for a look around and a drink, even if you choose to save a few bob by staying elsewhere.

The origins of the palace are linked to the life story of Jose Luis Constantino, who lived from 1855 to 1932. He played a significant role in developing the agriculture of Sao Tome and Principe, which between 1912 and 1915 was the world’s leading cocoa producer.

The Marquis of Valle Flor

Constantine made his fortune thanks to the Portuguese colony and was rewarded by the Portuguese king with the title of the Marquis of Valle Flor. He invested some of that wealth in his hillside Lisbon residence, which was built around the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries but has an Old World feel suggesting even greater antiquity.

The Marquis had close connections with France. This goes some way to explaining the decor of the Lousi XV and Louis XVI rooms.

The Japanese and Renaissance rooms also have an opulent feel. Now well-maintained, it is hard to imagine that, following the death of the Marquis of Valle Flor, this magnificent property was unused for decades.

Modern guestroom and a spa

The majority of the Pestana Palace’s hotel rooms are situated in recently built wing that’s linked by a walkway to the Palace of the Marquis of Valle Flor. Modern and comfortable, the rooms offer easy access to the gardens and spa area.

This hotel receives regular positive reviews and a visit here helps confirm why the 193-room Pestana Palace was named as Portugal’s Leading Hotel at the 2010 World Travel Awards.

Advance bookings, via the internet, offer good rates for stays at the Pestana Palace Hotel, which is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World organisation.
